the following review contains *spoilers* kiddies...
so lady in the water is based on a bedtime story m.night shamalan liked to tell to his kids. first of all... what the hell is wrong with him? i would not tell this story to my children. what ever happened to wicked stepsisters and fairy godmothers? anyways... shamalan is a crazy man. so first of all get it into your head that the plot to this movie is entirely wacky. got it? ok, i'm gonna try and summarize now. the story takes place in an apartment complex called 'the cove.' it is basically a bunch of apartments around a small pool. (paul giamotti) plays 'cleveland' the lonely studdering superintendent, and main character. cleveland thinks people are swimming in the pool late at night, when they're not supposed to be. one night he finds 'story' who is a water nymph. cleveland then finds out that she is a 'narph' or something, that is what water nymphs are called apparently, and that she has to meet a writer, to inspire him. so cleveland goes around to all the tenants, trying to find this writer. but as it turns out, story is a different narph, a 'queen narph' or something, and they have a different purpose. these narph's are chased by the 'grundy' ... which basically a huge wolf that is made of grass. these 'grundies' can hide in the grass, and can only be seen by one person, 'the guardian.' oh ya, and the grundy can only be defeated by like grass tree monkeys. (i forget what theyre called) so if the plot isn't nutty enough so far, it gets nuttier. for story to get back to the 'blue world' ..where she comes from, she has to find a cast of characters. a guardian. a healer. a writer. a guild. ok? so cleveland goes around the apartment complex, trying to find these people. all these people need to help guard story from the grundy, so she can await the giant eagle. the giant eagle takes her back to the blue world. whew. so do you understand that??? ya...me neither, and i just watched the movie. basically this movie was crazier than any m.night shamalan flick thus far. except it lacked one thing...the big pay off at the end. ya, not so much. but all in all...i was satisfied. it was ok. could of been better. but i am satisfied. i guess with all shamalan's flicks, you either love them, or hate them... and 'lady in the water' is no exception. but i liked it. i'd probably have to watch it again to actually understand it...but that's nothing new with these movies. good stuff. paul giamotti continues to be one of my new favorite actors, ron howard's daughter was really good as 'story' ....maybe that's just because i have a thing for redheads. i didn't watch 'the village' yet...i hear she's one of the main characters in that too. but anyways, the flick is decent. one more movie to see this week....so far i've been pretty satisfied. next up, 'my super ex-girlfriend.'
